The only way to share the Uspantec New Testament with
the majority of the Uspantecos is to use audio-visual materials because the
majority cannot read. Available to the Uspantecos who want to hear God's Word in
their own language is the 18 audio cassette set of the dramatized New Testament.
This is the Hosanna project, "Faith Comes by Hearing". [other
Center activities]
The 17 cassette set of the Uspantec New Testament. It is dramatized with
music and sound effects accompanying the Scripture text. 15 different
voices are heard on the tapes. It was produced in 2000.
Venancio Chitop started work as full time
promoter for the Hosanna project in December 2,002. After a year's time he now
has 92 families in 10 communities listening to God's Word. Over an 18 week
period a family will have heard the entire New Testament. May God's Word
bring forth fruit! (Venancio is one of the 15 people who participated in the
recording of the Uspantec New Testament.)
Venancio and his family gathered around their new wood burning stove. This
stove is designed to use 40% less wood then the normal open fire which most
people use to cook their food on. Venancio paid $ 25.00 {10 days' wages} to
receive this stove.
Venancio reading to Santa from the Uspantec Scriptures. He was
sharing John 6:28-29.
Venancio praying with Santa after the Scripture reading.
Venancio talking with a woman and her daughter from Chocorral, a community down
the valley from Las Pacayas. Juana had heard that her neighbors were listening
to the Scripture tapes, so she asked Venancio if she could get the tapes too.
Marta Ajchicu and family receiving tape # 6 to listen to. Marta speaks 4
languages: Uspanteco, Pocóm, Quiché, and Spanish.
Tomás Lopez and his daughter, Angelica, and granddaughter listening to the
audio Uspantec New Testament. When asked: "Do you enjoy
listening to God's Word?" he replied: "Oh yes very much, tijchap
wanm (it grabs my heart)!
Most of the listeners have their own cassette players so Venancio carries a
cassette head cleaner with him to keep the cassette players in the best working
order.
Diego Carrillo Vasquez, 75, almost completely blind from cataracts, came to ask
Margot for some medicine since he was not sleeping well, so she invited him to
have a cup of cooked oatmeal and milk and listen to Scripture audio tapes.
