Dateline: 12 June 2005

On June 5th 89 volunteers, mostly from the San Antonio Texas area, arrived in Uspantán to begin an intensive week of providing surgical and medical help to people of the area who normally would not have access to medical help, especially critical surgical help.  These volunteers were part of the Helps International team www.helpsintl.org that has been working in Guatemala for over 20 years.

We are very appreciative that Helps International sent 5 team members to Las Pacayas for the day to offer medical assistance to our neighbors. This outreach team did yeoman's service at the Uspanteco Center. Thank you so much from the bottom of our hearts!

Julio Carrillo took their names and then...

...at 8 a.m. Margie started screening the people who wanted to see the doctor. This was done so that
the more urgent needs could be attended to, since there was only one doctor to consult with and  6
hours in which to do it. Cristobal and Venancio kept the line moving.

Med Jorn doctora web.jpg (76349 bytes) The Guatemalan doctor saw over 75 patients in those 6 hours.

Med Jorn Denise giving medicine web.jpg (90060 bytes) A team member made a house call and gave
vitamins to a next door neighbor who has atrophied muscles. She encouraged her
to walk as much as possible every day.
She also prayed with Pedro and his wife, Cecilia, that the LORD would give her strength.

The pharmacist had her hands full in distributing medicines in order to keep the line moving.
She often asked Margie:  "How can you tell this patient to take this medicine?"

Med Jorn Jane blood pressure web.jpg (73595 bytes)Med Jorn thermometer tastes bad web.jpg (94707 bytes)

The nurse took the vital signs of the patients before they were examined by the doctor. Does that
thermometer really taste that bad?  Please enlarge the photo above right to see the expression
on the girl's face.
