Dateline January 31, 2005

Three weeks ago Margie offered to our co-workers a monetary commission on any Mayan literature, including New Testaments, that they might sell. She did this in order to promote wider distribution of the books we have published in Uspanteco.

Miguel Hernandez, the literacy teacher in Las Pacayas, jumped at the chance and said he would even be interested in going to the Uspantán market on Sundays.  He enjoys selling things to people. So we made immediate plans to get him involved in selling Uspanteco and Quiché literature. His first day "On The Street" was January 30th.

Literacy selling books Miguel's sister cu web.JPG (154117 bytes) Alicia, Miguel's sister is selling a warm drink of rice and milk while her brother is selling literature.  Her store is across the street from the terminal for busses, trucks, and pickups that ferry market goers to and from outlying villages to the Sunday market in Uspantán. So there are lots of people passing within earshot of the loudspeaker announcing books and audio cassettes for sale.

Stan is working on the idea of building a 3 wheel book-mobile so that Miguel can move to various locations around the town on market day in order to make contact with more potential book buyers.  We will let you know, with more photos and much fanfare if this becomes a reality.

As of May 7, 2005 it is now a reality, click here.
